Memorial Day, we honor the fallen, who fought and died so that we can remain free. May 5, 1868, Memorial Day proclamation (General Orders No. 11) by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic:
"Let us, then, at the time appointed gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with the choicest flowers of spring-time; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from dishonor; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us a sacred charge upon a nation's gratitude, the soldier's and sailor's widow and orphan."
Taking time, the next time you are rushed to get by the kindly gentleman going a little slower, take a moment, open a door, smile and extend a hand of help. The next time you wish the poky driver would move over, anxiously you want to blast your horn, remember, that driver may have not been so poky as they climbed one more hill, raised our flag, freed a nation; some never felt their loving arms again, leaving sweet memories of yesterday for a wife or mother. For every time our men and women arrive home, their families waiting with tears of joy, a young brides anticipation, there are other tears, heart wrenching, for the one who scarified all, coming home draped by an American Flag.
